Born on April 4, 1933, in Tzagkinatika,
Gimari, a small village just 300 meters rom the place where a few years
later he would build his own home.
Spiros lost his father Thomas
when he was just 3 years old. He drowned in a tragic fishing accident
while out in his small boat on the high seas. His mother Aspasia then
had to move the family to a new home in Vlachatika because she was
pregnant with her second child, their daughter Thomaidis.
Although only 7 years old, little
Spiro had to work in order to help his mother and younger sister. He
learned his profession as a fisherman from his uncles, who were all
tough men of the sea. At the age of 22 years, he had bought his own
boat by working hard, and yet enjoying every moment that life had to
A natural entertainer who loved
to sing, Spiros was always in demand by his friends at their parties and
gatherings. He married at the age of 28 to Mary Magdalene, a perfect
wife and mother, and together they have a beautiful family, with their 2
boys, Thomas and Dimitri.
Magdalene stood beside him
throughout all the difficult years and together they fought for a better
life for themselves and their children.
In 1968, tourism started to
become the main focus on Corfu and Spiro got his third boat, a bigger
one designed for carrying people, and he spent his time carrying
tourists and locals around this beautiful area to show them, by sea,
what magical places Corfu has to offer. Through all these years he
acquired so many friends and is remembered with great affection as "Captain
Spiros" or Captain Yamas"
He was the most well known
Captain in these parts and because of his open nature and personality,
he was a friend to the wealthiest visitors to the area and was also
included, on his boat, in the James Bond movie, For Your Eyes Only, with
Roger Moore, but he never let fame go to his head!!!
He was a special man, very hard
and tough, and yet sensitive, welcoming and simple. He had a great
passion for nature, people, feasting, drink and good company, and gave
his all to his friends, their families and the people he met throughout
Sadly, Spiros died on February
19, 1996, but he lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
We would like to thank our
friends who gave us this video and some photographs to help remember him
by, and if any of you have saved any video or pictures, we would be very
happy to receive them and to share them with you all. Doing this was a
great pleasure for the entire family and brought back some beautiful old
memories, and brought the late Captain Spiro among us again.
