DIMITRIS RESTAURANT
The restaurant is set on
the north east of Corfu. This beautiful area was often chosen by
well known artists and film producers to use as inspiration for
their work. Films like
James Bond’s
”For your eyes only” (with
Roger Moore) and
Megistanas ????
(with
Anthony Quinn) are only two from
many filmed in the area.
The restaurant was built in 1990 on Vlahatica’s
steep slope. A small but traditionally styled building, is
literally
hooked on to
the rocky slope above Kalami’s beautiful bay. Gerald and Lawrence
Durrell’s
White
House still stands at the south side of Kalami bay and is the house
where “My
family and other
Animals”
and “Black Olives” were written.
The views and colours
are magnificent as the day goes by and the light changes. The blue
sea in front, the green Bay and the grey Albanian mountains across
the water create a magic atmosphere.
The little restaurant
traditional in style and atmosphere, but still modern represents Dimitri’s - the owners - life, character and ambitions.
It is decorated
with old family pictures, tools from the past, old musical
instruments, paintings from local village artists and model boats
made by his own father Captain Spiro. Through the interior you can
see Dimitri’s hobby, horse riding and now a 2nd business.
The kitchen is the part
of the restaurant that Dimitris is very proud of and he welcomes any
of his clients to come and see how the food is prepared as an old
and vanishing Greek tradition in the old “magiria”
The Greek cuisine is not
only “mousaka”
or “
souvlakia ”.

Sophisticated
combination, made from local ingredients - in food terms,
Greek food is where East
meets West. Simple and yet complicated. Light but tasty plates,
beautifully presented, make the restaurant that little bit more that
a simple
taverna . Twenty-two years of experience contributes to
improving year after year and fulfilling the guests
expectations. The name “Nouveau Greek Cuisine” was given by one of the
clients in describing Dimitri's choice of food, in one British news
paper.
A lot of effort is made to select the best ingredients.
Dimitris has a small allotment, growing organic vegetables which are
used in the restaurant.
However good
the food
might be, it is not good enough unless accompanied
by good
wine. Dimitri makes a point in selecting a variety of wines from
small Greek producers often certified organic. A variety of other
drinks, aperitifs and cocktails are also on the menu.
Music evenings are organized regularly with light Greek music for
something different from the usual.
Parties, wedding receptions
and birthdays are organised in a special and very personal ambience
with
service to meet and exceed the guests’ expectations. Dimitri’s
guarantee is his 22 years experience and his excellent team!

Abstract
from the Corfiot magazine
"New Greek Cuisine Dimitris Restaurant - Kalami, Main Road,
some visitors sent a letter to The Corfiot magazine, praising the
food at Dimitris Restaurant above Kalami.
The writers,
self-professed Good Food Lovers, enthused about the mainly Greek
menu which also featured a few English dishes (such as Smoked Salmon
with dill and lemon mayonnaise), mentioning also Baked Feta Cheese
to die for, and wonderful Minted Lamb Cutlets. My husband, continued
the writer, ordered Swordfish, Mussel and Bacon Kebabs - delicious!
The production of
this newspaper finally prompted a visit to Dimitris, and the food
lived up to its reputation, and more. It would be a pity to stick to
writing about what I enjoyed (apart from mentioning that it was
brilliant) when the menu comprises such an interesting choice. I can
only describe the style as Greek Nouveau Cuisine in that it uses
locally available ingredients in new and original ways.
Take feta cheese. At Dimitris it is offered as Toasted Bacon and
Feta Salad - melting soft cheese patty concealed by a crisp bacon
coating and served on a bed of mixed salad leaves tossed in
vinaigrette. Or basic ingredients like steak, Metaxa and yoghurt.
Here, they combine the brandy and yoghurt into a wonderful sauce for
the steak. Simple and original.
Kalamari is
flame-grilled with chillies and baked fish in foil (is) served with
tomato, herbs and olives with potato gratin and fresh vegetables.
What about the Minted Lamb Cutlets mentioned above They come in
Greek yoghurt with warm pitta bread and a tomato and onion garnish.
And Briam, a ratatouille-style vegetable dish, is accompanied with
melted feta cheese toasts.
Some other dishes that
caught the eye were Three Dip Medley with warm pitta bread (this
includes hummus, rarely prepared in Corfu). Next time what shall I
choose? Perhaps Chicken Coriander salad, followed by Poached Salmon
with Lemon Butter. Or Stuffed Mussels, then Dimitris Special Chicken
(with tasty beer, mustard and tomato sauce). And theres an excellent
wine list including a selection from some of Greeces top wineries.
Just look forward to it.
Evening booking is
recommended on (+30) 2663091172.
And you can also enjoy the fabulous view over Kalami."
